South Coast Escapes
Hello and welcome to winter! The colder months are now fully upon us, but that doesn’t mean the time for holidays is over. A winter getaway in the Shoalhaven happens to line up perfectly with the whale watching season (May to November) and there’s never a bad time to throw on a jacket and explore the local shops, natural attractions and live events that are dotted all the way down the South Coast.
Don’t believe us? Just scroll down and read all the fantastic opportunities for food, fun and family bonding coming up in June in the Shoalhaven.
If you’re a foodie with a taste for the vines, the Shoalhaven boasts numerous wineries all along the far south coast, all the way from Kiama to Milton and out west to Kangaroo Valley. Head out for a tour, or pick one of the many wineries with lunch and cheese boards available such as Mountain Ridge Wines and Cambewarra Estate, and have lunch with a wine tasting and beautiful view to go along with it.
For a bit of arts and culture, you can check out StoryFest – the Shoalhaven’s own writers festival with published authors, poets and storytellers coming for live events across Milton, Ulladulla and Mollymook. If music and dance are more your thing, The Australian Fleetwood Mac Experience is coming to town, as is the World of Musicals and the Sydney Dance Company show Impermanence.
To check out those whales we mentioned on their annual migration, book a Whale Cruise with Jervis Bay Wild to witness the humpback whales up close on their journey. If you’d rather stay on land, there are innumerable natural lookouts, headlands and lighthouses along the Far South Coast, and some of our holiday homes even have binoculars you can borrow for a better look!
Up for a completely unique and immersive experience? Check out the Viking Festival at Sussex Inlet on 12+13 June! A celebration of the area’s Scandinavian heritage, the festival will showcase local businesses, a viking village and camp with tents and fire pit, cooking display, viking games, armoured combat, knattleikr (kind of like medieval football), wrestling, crafts, amusements and activities for the kids, Scandinavian food, live music & entertainment and much more, all for just $15 entry.
Of course, you can always take it easy and spend a weekend wandering around the beautiful community markets that pop up all over the Shoalhaven, and browse the local crafts and produce. Check out Jervis Bay Maritime Museum Market, Culburra Beach Monthly Markets, Jindyandy Community Market, Marriot Park Markets, and The Mill Market, just to name a few.
See what we mean? There’s so much to keep you entertained down in the Shoalhaven, and always an excuse to take a holiday. Book your trip now!
